Minority stress and burnout in gay and bi men: recovering without shrinking yourself

Living in a world that wasn't built for you is exhausting. Here's how affirming counselling helps gay and bi men recover from minority stress and burnout without asking you to hide.

Minority stress isn't just about big incidents. It's the accumulation of small things: deciding whether it's safe to mention a partner at work, navigating a room that assumes a straight life, explaining yourself to yet another professional, the low background hum of being read wrong.

**How it shows up** Over time, this drip-drip of vigilance can present as anxiety, burnout, numbness, irritability, or a sense that you've lost touch with who you used to be.

**What therapy can and can't do** Therapy doesn't fix the world, but it can help you recover your capacity to be in it. That might mean noticing early signs of overwhelm, setting boundaries that actually stick, grieving what you've had to carry, and reconnecting with joy as a political and personal act.

You don't have to earn rest. You don't have to be productive to be worthy of care.

Great Thriving offers online, identity-affirming counselling for gay and bi men across the UK and Europe.
