Getting started

What actually happens in a first online therapy session? A plain-English guide

If you've never done therapy before — or never done it online — here's a plain-language guide to what to expect in a first counselling session with a gay-led, affirming counsellor and how to prepare.

The first session is mainly about getting a sense of each other. I'll ask what brought you here, what you're hoping might change, and a bit about your context — where you're based, who matters to you, what support you already have.

**You don't need to prepare a speech** You can cry, ramble, sit in silence, or say "I don't know where to start" — that's a perfectly fine place to begin. Cameras are optional for the first session if that's easier.

**We'll cover practicalities too** How often we'll meet, fees, cancellation policy, confidentiality limits, and what to do if you're in crisis between sessions. By the end, you should have a clear sense of whether this feels like a fit.

The free 30-minute intro call is exactly for this: no commitment, no pressure, just a conversation to see if working together makes sense.

Great Thriving offers online, identity-affirming counselling for gay and bi men across the UK and Europe.
